We have three exam rooms for our patients, this is where pets are first greeted by a technician, before getting examined by the doctor

Our upstairs kennel area includes four large runs for our hospitalized patients, as well as a separate cat ward, dog ward, and a special isolation room for potentially contagious patients.

All cats that are boarding with us stay in our cat ward. We keep cats separate from dogs for their comfort.

All of our smaller canine boarders stay in our dogward, where they can rest and relax comfortably. All dogs are walked four times a day by our kennel attendents, and are checked on every 10 minutes to make sure thier water is full and bedding clean.

Karen Scruggs

Karen has been a kennel attendant here at Radford Animal Hospital since July of 2007 but has been working kennels for over three years. She was recently promoted to Kennel Manager. She is a graduate of Bishop Hafey High School in Hazelton, PA. Karen has two daughters April (who also workes with us in the kennel) and Heather (a vet student at Virginia Tech). Her pets include a boxer named Benny, a beagle named Holly and nine cats named Mickey, Minnie, Manson, Zodiac, Archimedes, Karma, Ghandi, Galileo, and Dhalia. In her spare time Karen enjoys reading and gardening. We are proud to have Karen as our kennel manager because she truly loves each of the patients and boarders here at RAH as if the were her own. Dr. Mark Newman

Dr. Newman is a New River Valley native who has been in practice for over 20 years. He is a graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional Veterinary College at Virginia Tech. He also earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech. Dr. Newman is the only Canine/ Feline Diplomate certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in private practice in the New River Valley. There are only 10 A.B.V.P. Canine/Feline Board Certified Specialists in the entire state of Virginia. Dr. Newman mastered a rigorous and demanding application process and certification examination in order to obtain Diplomate status. To qualify to sit for the extensive, two-day examination, a veterianarian must complete either a residency program or six years of clinical veterinary practice. Dr. Newman has been an American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Board Certified Specialist for over 10 years. He is extremely skilled and serves our patients as a General Practitioner. He enjoys cases of dermatology, cardiology, dentistry, orthopedics, and more. His greatest skill however lies in his ability to relate to every pet he treats as if it were his own. In his free time, you can find Dr. Newman at Virginia Tech football and basketball games as well as Radford High School sports. He also enjoys spending time with his family which including his miniature Australian Shepherd, Possum. View
Mandi Martinez

Mandi has been with Radford Animal Hospital since 1999. She is married with 2 four-legged children , "Sally" the Doberman Pinscher. She was adopted by Mandi and her husband, Phil from a Doberman rescue group in Northern Virginia. The newest addition to the family is their Great Dane puppy, "Gracie", adopted from the Montgomery County Humane Society. Mandi is currently working on her certification to become a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager. Her hobbies include cooking, gardening, and VA Tech football. She is also very active in her church. She is the leader of the Children's Ministry team as well as a coordinator for Financial Peace University. She has a beautiful daughter named Nicole born in February, 2005. The newest two-legged addition to the family is their son Roland who was born in February, 2007. Dr. "Wally" came to the New River Valley in 2004. She grew up in New England but moved to this area to attend vet school at Virginia Tech. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Animal Science from the University of Delaware where she also pursued graduate level training in Animal Nutrition. Before completing her Master's degree, she was accepted into the Veterinary Medicine program at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her DVM degree in 2008. Dr. Wally gained valuable experience her first year out of vet school working in emergency medicine. She now looks forward to the longer term relationships she will develop with her patients and clients at Radford Animal Hospital. While passionate about all aspects of veterinary medicine, Dr. Wally has special interest in the areas of nutrition, reproduction, geriatrics and preventative medicine. She believes the goal of veterinary medicine is to protect the lifelong health of her patients and encourage their position as a valued member of the family. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Wally enjoys many outdoor sports including hiking, camping, and horseback riding. She enjoys training and competing with her dogs in obedience, agility and herding. She and her husband, Stephen, celebrated the birth of their first child in August of 2008, a beautiful girl named Marin. They currently share their home with two dogs: a Briard named Cedar and a border collie named Luci, one cat (named Aggie), and 14 laying hens. Julie is a graduate of Radford University with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. She graduated in 2007 from Blue Ridge Community College with an A.A.S. in Veterinary Technology and obtained her LVT (Liscenced Veterinary Technician). As an LVT Julie is a highly skilled member of our team. Julie has been with Radford Animal Hospital since June of 2007 and currently holds the position of head technician. Dentistry and surgery are her special areas of interest. Julie is married and has two four legged boxer babies named Brandon and wrigley. She is a member of VA Association of Liscenced Veterinary Technicians and in her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and outdoor activities. Courtney has been a receptionist at Radford Animal Hospital since April of 2007. She is married and has a 9 year old daughter named Karen. She is a member of the PSA. Her pets include three dogs: a border collie named Ashley, a shepherd/corgi mix named Paco, and a lovable mutt named Teddy, as well as four cats named Pooh, Jezabell, Angel and Dori. Cynthia has been a receptionist here at Radford Animal Hospital since Nov. 2000. She has been married to her husband Lloyd for 17 years and has a 10 year old daughter named Lauren. Outside of work she is a dedicated member of Valley Harvest Ministries, where she is part of the choir and is a musician on the Praise and Worship team. Shawnna has been with Radford Animal Hospital since May of 2001. She is a graduate of Pulaski County HIgh School an has atended New River Community College and Virginia Intermont. Shawnna is married and has two boys Thomas (3 yrs) and Shawn (2 yrs). She recently lost her two boxers, Gypsy and Bernard, to cancer. Gabriella divides hewr time between her favorite things- animals and sociology. In addition to being on the reception staff at RAH, she teaches intoductory sociology courses and is pursuing her PhD in the subject. Rhiannon Brown

Rhiannon has been with Radford Animal Hospital since July of 2007. She is a graduate of Radford University with a B.S. in Biology and is currently attending Penn Foster College working toward becoming a Licenced Veterinary Technician. Rhiannon got her start in the animal field with 5 years of experience in all numerous aspects of the Humane Society including bottle raising over 2 dozen infant kittens and puppies. Rhiannon has two dogs: a hound mix named Tyson and an elderly Shih Tzu named Sandy. Rhiannon also has six cats (Stevie, Carol, Muffin, Andy Baby and Delilah); most with special needs. She is interested in the management of Diabetes and seizure disorders and the special needs cases as she manages them in her own home everyday. She is an avid cat lover and an HSMC supporter. Heather is our full time groomer. She has been grooming for over four years with us. She has two dogs: a rottweiler named Reagan who shows in Seiger style dog shows and trains for Schutzhund, another rottweiler named Colby who is the couch potato of the group, and a lab mix named Duke who enjoys agility training. She also has a cat named Sophie, and a special-needs cat named Diamond. In her spare time she does petsitting, rottweiler rescue, and volunteers working with shelter animals and fostering. Sarah came to Radford Animal Hospital in July of 2009. She grew up in Lynchburg but most recently worked in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She has been working with animals since the young age of 16. Sara shares her home with her dog, a pointer mix named Katie. She also has 5 cats: Shrub, Stinky, Sadie, puff-n-stuff, and peepers.
